Philly Tech Week: Complete Guide to Events, History and What to Expect

Each May, Philadelphia hosts a weeklong open calendar of technology and innovation events for Philly Tech Week, drawing founders, students and engineers from across the city.

Unlike a single conference, the week belongs to the whole local community. Founders, students, engineers and investors host their own sessions. If you are new to the idea, our guide on what is Tech Week explains how this format works in every city. This article covers how the Philadelphia version started, what happened in 2026, and how to plan for 2027.

What Is Philly Tech Week?

Philly Tech Week, also called Philadelphia Tech Week or PTW, is an annual, weeklong celebration of local tech and innovation. It works as an open calendar, with events hosted by local companies, institutions and independent organizers rather than one central program.

That means the mix is wide. You can find beginner meetups, industry panels, hackathons, career days, pitch contests and evening social events. Most sessions are set up and priced by the host, so you register for each one on its own.

Who Organizes It and How It Started

Historic Philadelphia street with a modern coworking interior

Philly Tech Week is one of the older Tech Weeks in the country. In 2014, more than 140 events were planned between April 4 and April 12, and the celebration was coordinated by Technical.ly Philly, a local media group covering tech. That edition also featured a giant game of Tetris played on the Cira Centre near 30th Street Station.

Today the week is organized by 1Philadelphia, a nonprofit that supports local tech founders with education, community and capital. Technical.ly stays closely involved as a media partner. The week sits beside other 1Philadelphia programs, including its Startup Summit and the People Accelerator for early founders.

Philly Tech Week 2026 Recap

The 2026 edition ran May 4 to 8 and tied into the city’s America 250 celebration. Its theme was Tech for the People, chosen for the 250th anniversary of Independence Hall.

The calendar grew fast. Early previews counted around 50, then more than 80 events, but the final tally reached nearly 100 events, more than double the number during the 15th anniversary the year before. Organizers said the week felt more energized than the past few years.

Here are the moments people talked about most:

  • A first AI summit. Pennovation teamed up with groups like Philly AI Connect, Code and Coffee, VetsinTech and Philly Tech Council to run a full day AI event for founders, researchers and investors.
  • The Startup Summit. Held at a two story sports and social club in Fishtown, it covered fundraising, partnerships and building companies with intention. The venue was chosen to match the summit’s competition theme.
  • Startup Sprint. PACT and the law firm Cozen O’Connor let selected entrepreneurs pitch privately to investors. The top three won a slot at PACT’s Mid-Atlantic Capital Conference in the fall.
  • Career day for students. Per Scholas showed in demand tech jobs to high school seniors and recent graduates from local programs, with interview practice included.
  • IP to Impact. Cambridge Innovation Center opened the week with a summit on taking research and patents to market.
  • The Builders Conference. Technical.ly hosted economic development leaders, founders and technologists from 35 states across two days.
  • The world’s largest video game. The closing party ended with the giant video game played live on both sides of the Cira Centre, a callback to a favorite moment from 2014.

Smaller groups mattered just as much. Meetups served Black STEM professionals, women founders and investors, veterans in tech, data workers and design professionals, and the design group PhillyCHI held its 20th annual Design Slam. That community first spirit is what separates this week from a typical trade show.

Philly Tech Week 2027: Dates and What to Expect

Mark May 3 to 8, 2027 on your calendar. The organizers have already announced that date for the 17th annual Philly Tech Week, again hosted by 1Philadelphia. May 3 is a Monday and May 8 is a Saturday, so the week runs six days.

Recent organizer figures for the week list one city, six days, about 96 events and more than 100 partners. The organizers have also described the week as reaching up to 15,000 attendees. Treat these as organizer estimates, since attendance is hard to count across so many independent events.

Based on the pattern from 2026, expect these things in 2027:

  • A Monday Tech Walk so newcomers can meet people before the busy days.
  • A large Startup Summit run by 1Philadelphia.
  • A closing party that brings the whole ecosystem together.
  • Sessions on AI, workforce training, cybersecurity, life sciences and gaming.
  • A calendar that fills up over spring as hosts add events, so check back often.

The official hub is phillytechweek.com, and the calendar is also listed on Luma. Some outside groups offer extras such as shared housing for attendees, but those are independent and not run by the week itself.

How to Get the Most Out of the Week

  1. Start on Monday. The Tech Walk and kickoff events make it easy to meet people first.
  2. Pick three anchor events. Choose one summit, one meetup and one social event, then fill in around them.
  3. Cluster by neighborhood. Center City, University City, Fishtown and the riverfront are far enough apart that travel time adds up.
  4. RSVP early. Popular panels and parties fill quickly, and many hosts share the exact address only after you register.
  5. Follow up within 48 hours. A short message to three new contacts is worth more than twenty business cards.

Other Philadelphia Tech Events Worth Knowing

The city keeps busy outside May, which helps if you want to build a network before 2027.

Philly Codefest. Drexel’s 13th annual hackathon ran April 11 to 12, 2026, with 375 participants and sponsors and 78 team project submissions. It is a free hackathon open to everyone, with no coding experience required. It is separate from Philly Tech Week, but the two share the same crowd.

Devopsdays Philly. This community run conference returns to the Science History Institute in Old City on October 1 and 2, 2026.

Innovation Weekend. 1Philadelphia lists this fall event for October 22 to 24.

Startup World Cup, Philadelphia round. The city held its third edition in September 2026, with an emissions tracking startup named GreenIRR taking the top prize.

Philadelphia’s model feels closer to a community festival than a corporate conference.
